Sony X830C Smart TV Review – How Good is Android TV?

Q1: What kind of smart TV does this model offer?

A: The Sony X830C uses Android TV on BRAVIA. Sony’s Android TV allows you to view your smartphone content on the big screen quite easily. This allows the smart TV functions of Android TV to be perfect for Android tablets and smartphones, as well as for gaming.

You can download a huge range of applications on this model, including those from Google Play—but you don’t have to have an Android to enjoy the smart TV functions such as streaming or web browsing. However, for those who do have Android devices, this 4K TV is perfect for your accessories if you plan on using streaming videos like Netflix or Hulu, stream content from your smartphone, ot to easily mirror the content from your phone to TV in a snap.

Q2: Is the Android operating system any good?

A: Sony certainly advertised their smart Android TV, which allows smartphone content to be easily viewed on the big screen—but some had issues with the integrated operating system. They experienced glitches, applications that failed to display picture but continued to display audio, and some took issue with the Picture settings menu, which a few thought was laid out bad.

They also did not like the initial 30 minute long update you have to do, that can’t be done from the initial setup process—which makes more work getting your 4K TV up and running. If you do not do the update you will have serious problems getting any of the applications to work, especially Netflix, which needs the update to show up in the apps.

For others, the Android operating system worked fine and the applications experienced no glitches, so there may be some variation and reliability issues with this TV. To avoid any of the glitches or picture issues, be sure to go into the Settings and make your own calibrations based on your preferences.

Q3: 4K TVs aren’t known for their sound, but is the sound okay, or does this model need a surround sound?

A: The sound quality on this Sony X830C model is about what you would expect. Just like most other 4K TVs right now, the sound quality is a 5 or 6 out of a 10. I would personally invest in a sound bar or a surround sound system. They can be pretty affordable nowadays.

However, note that when it comes to setting up your surround sound to this TV model, that some users do not like this TV seems to default back to the TV volume with every use. For example, on every power up, the TV wants users to decide if they want to use their surround sound external speakers that they would have to select the choice. This puts some users off, having to go out of their way every time instead of the TV sticking with the surround sound permanently upon power up of the television. I personally would find this annoying, seeing as one should buy a sound bar or external speakers—not having them work as you want them too is not a good deal.
